About The Tour

5-9 hours A County Town: Guildford and the Surrey countryside

Just 40 minutes or so by train from central London, Guildford is a classic example of an appealing commuter town steeped in history and with an enviable location close to the North Downs hills and on the River Wey. Your local guide will meet you either in London or at the Guildford train station.

Explore and learn about its diverse history, passing sites, such as the Norman castle, built shortly after William the Conqueror’s 1066 invasion, the medieval Guildhall and almshouses and the modernist 20th Century Cathedral. There are options for fine shopping and diverse dining- a riverside pub or quaint Italian restaurant for example.

Continue with your guide to see the house and statues of where Lewis Carroll wrote – he is famous for children's ‘fables ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘Alice through the Looking Glass’. The day is very flexible and can include short excursions onto the Downs, an area of outstanding natural beauty for far reaching views north and south, or strolling by the River Wey towards the historic market town of Godalming, or a short taxi ride to the chocolate box village of Shere where ‘The Holiday’ movie starring Cameron Diaz was party filmed.
